About Rob

"Since graduating from Exeter College of Art and Design with a BA(Hons) in Fine Art and a Postgraduate Certificate of Education from Exeter University, and deciding to live in Devon, I have developed successful careers as both a teacher and a painter. My work has sold through a number of galleries and exhibitions. I work almost exclusively in watercolour as I find this offers me the opportunity to respond almost immediately to my surroundings. I work from sketches, field studies and, in recent years, from my own digital photographs.

My watercolours reflect my enjoyment of the British landscape. The fleeting changes of light and shadow that can alter the land, sea or river in an instant and then just as quickly be lost forever are the starting points for much of my work.

I am currently working on a series of paintings based on local estuaries. I love mud! The kinetic effects of light on mud, the reflections in pools, shadows on ripples left in the exposed riverbed, beached boats, the lines of ropes and a the often brilliant colours of buoys set against the muted colours of the estuary at low tide are resulting in paintings such as The Rudder. And there are more to come!

When I am not painting I am directing my creative talents in other directions. I continue to work with Richard Golesowski on the popular children's series 'Shaun the Sheep'. We are also working on a few other exciting projects at Aardman Animation; details to follow... though Siān continues to be mystified that Golly and I can spend hours laughing our socks off and getting paid for it! About Rob and Siān

Rob and Siān Dudley have lived in Devon for over 25 years. As artists they find the area constantly inspiring, providing them with a wealth of subject matter, from dramatic Dartmoor landscapes to the stunning South Devon coast.

Over the years they have had a number of exhibitons and exhibited in a number of local galleries. Their work is held in private collections both in the UK and abroad.

Demand for their work grew, and in 2005 they set up Moor to Sea Arts, allowing them to spend more time painting. Unable to entirely forego the pleasure of teaching they decided to run their own workshops, and demand continues to grow for them both as demonstrators.
About Siān

"I have enjoyed drawing and painting since I was old enough to hold a pencil. Throughout my education this was chanelled into closely observed biological drawings and diagrams. That the botanical element of my degree in Microbiology is clearly reflected in my work is undeniable!
My artistic side became more evident as I studied for my PGCE at Exeter University, and I have spent the years since encouraging others to develop their own artistic skills.

I find watercolour a truly exciting medium to work on. Inspired by the beautiful effects that are only possible in watercolour I feel the medium itself has seduced me into a very exploratative and experimental approach to painting. I can't ever imagine developing an instantly recognisable 'style' as I enjoy the variety too much, although I am known for my flower paintings and have been referred to as 'The Conker Lady' !  The translucent quality of watercolour paint on the page, the clarity of colour achievable, its' textural lightness, its' response to the paper and the way certain pigments granualate as they dry combine to make it a perfect medium for capturing the transient qualities of light. 'Just add water' and it becomes a medium with a life of its own that entices me into a balancing act of control and giving the medium its freedom. I spend many happy hours watching paint dry!

In terms of subject matter I am currently working on a portfolio of portraits. Watercolour portraits are an exciting challenge, the quality of the medium itself representing the fleeting and subtle changes of expressions that make the human face so interesting.

I am also working on a number of commissions I have accepted for bridal bouquets. Flowers are amongst my favourite subjects, and the excitement surrounding a wedding makes this very enjoyable! I have dedicated a whole new website to this side of my work, so for more information please visit
