The aim of Summer School is to give participants the opportunity to have an extended period of uninterrupted painting under the guidance of friendly and informative tutors, in the company of other watercolour enthusiasts.
The idea is that the Summer School workshops are planned around what you would like to achieve. In discussion with you, Rob and Siân will come up with a plan for you based on your experience and interests. Typically you might choose to explore the medium of watercolour, complete one (or more!) painting from start to finish, or investigate your understanding of painting as an art form. You may choose to simply just be there, painting alongside like- minded people. The choice is yours, and we are always open to suggestions! Whatever you choose to do you will continue to receive support and advice throughout your time with us.
While the workshops are mainly studio based, there is the opportunity to go out to paint or to gather reference material.
SUmmer school 2017
Summer School in 2017 is currently being planned for mid August. We will publish details as soon as we have confirmed them.
Our Summer School is extremely popular. As places are limited we often, sadly, have to turn some people away. If you would like to go on our mailing list to have an opportunity to book early for 2017 please contact us, putting 'Summer School 2017' in the subject line.
Things you might like to consider doing at Summer School...
As the workshops are tailored as closely as possible to the individual's needs it is possible to join us for just one of them, or any combination that suits you.
Explore the medium of watercolour
Watercolour is an exciting medium, with a life of its own. In discussion with you, Rob and Siân will devise a plan that will help you to discover not only what you can do with your materials, but what your materials can do for you. Of course paints, brushes and types of paper all come under consideration, but so might palette knives, kitchen roll, masking fluid and a host of other useful things both found and commercially produced!Through exercises, demonstrations and experimentation you will have opportunity to develop your skills, and be enthused to learn more about this adventurous medium!
Complete a Painting from Start to Finish
These workshops should be an excellent opportunity for you to complete one or more paintings, taking a painting through from initial idea to finished piece.
Successful watercolour requires more planning than other media (though the idea that it is impossible to correct mistakes at all in watercolour is a fallacy!). We will guide you through a painting from initial inspiration, through gathering reference information (sketches, photographs etc), choosing techniques and colours, and order of application to completed work. You will leave us understanding that the reward such planning gives is the freedom to paint a fresh, loose, lively watercolour!
Develop your Understanding of Painting
Alternatively you may use the time to fill some gaps in your knowledge of painting. We often hear "I know it's not right, but I don't know why!" If you recognise this sentiment we would recommend you bring along some of your previous work for some very constructive criticism, and a plan for how you can improve your work. To get the most out of these sessions it would be a very good idea to have some idea of what you would like to achieve during the workshop before you come. Both Rob and Siân are more than happy to discuss this with you beforehand, by email or telephone.
