Moor to Sea Arts Tuition

Summer School

The main aim of this Summer School is to give students the opportunity to have an extended period of uninterrupted painting under the guidance of friendly and informative tutors, in the company of other watercolour enthusiasts..

The idea is that these workshops will be 'student led'.To this end there will be little formal teaching to the group; rather we will respond to what students bring along. We will offer advice on an individual basis throughout the workshops.

Our teaching method involves using exercises, demonstrations and experimentation on your part to discover not only what you can do, but what your materials can do for you. We are happy to set up exercises either as requested by students, or where we see that it might help to master a technique.
Given the nature of the workshops it is unlikely that we will go out to paint, but we wouldn't rule it out!

Explore the medium of watercolour

Watercolour is an exciting medium, with a life of its own. Our teaching method involves exercises, demonstrations and experimentation on your part to discover not only what you can do, but what your materials can do for you.We are happy to set up exercises either as requested by students, or where we see that it might help to master a technique. Whether you are a beginner or more advanced, these workshops will enthuse you to learn more about the medium.

Develop Your Understanding of Painting as an Artform

Alternatively you may use the time to fill some gaps in your knowledge of watercolour. We often hear "I know it's not right, but I don't know why!". If you recognise this sentiment we would recommend you bring along some of your previous work for some very constructive criticism, and a plan for how you can improve your work. To get the most out of these sessions it would be a very good idea to have some idea of what you would like to achieve during the workshop before you come. Both Rob and Siân are more than happy to discuss this with you beforehand.

Completing a painting from start to Finish

These workshops should be an excellent opportunity for you to complete one or more paintings, taking a painting through from initial idea to finished piece.

The Summer School is open to everyone ~ all abilities are welcome.

Successful watercolour requires more planning than other media (though the idea that it is impossible to correct mistakes at all in watercolour is a fallacy!). We will guide you through a painting from initial inspiration, through gathering reference information (sketches, photographs etc), choosing techniques and colours, and order of application to completed work. You will leave us understanding that the reward such planning gives is the freedom to paint a fresh, loose, lively watercolour!

Whichever workshops you choose to attend, we definitely encourage you to bring some of your work along for us to see. Please don't be shy - it would help us to help you! We recognise that not everyone is ready to exhibit, and you need not show your work to anyone else if you don't want to!
