ART ADVICe
Guidelines
The following guidelines are intended to give you more information about what to expect from Moor to Sea Arts One-to-One Art Advice. The guide also gives some idea of how much content it is reasonable to get through in one Art Advice session.
The guide is based on our experience. It is essential that you keep in mind that these are guidelines only! Each individual is different, coming to us from different starting points and experience, and with different questions. Each art project is different, some more complex than others. As tutors with many years of experience behind us, we are confident we can adjust our input to each situation as it arises!
You have inspiration but do not know where to start.
The time is likely to allow for discussion of only one art project. Topics of discussion may include defining what it is you find inspiring, how to gather reference material to support your idea, beginning to design a composition.
You need advice on the practical aspects on the process of painting
The time is likely to allow for discussion of only one art project. Topics of discussion may include considering your reference material, composition, tonal balance, colour palette to be used, materials to choose, and the order in which to work.
You are part way through a painting and not sure how to progress
The time is likely to allow for discussion of only one art project, but depending on the complexity of your questions and our assessment, it might be possible to discuss two. Topics of discussion may include defining your original aims for the artwork, how you feel the painting is progressing towards these, whether there are glaring errors that need adjustment ( and advice on how to do that), and what your next steps are.
You have completed a painting and would like it critiqued.
The time allowed may allow for more than one artwork, but it is unlikely to allow for more than three. Topics of discussion should include your original aims for the artwork, and whether you feel you have achieved them. We will discuss whether we agree, what is great about the artwork, and where you could make improvements. If presenting more than one painting for critique you should consider defining their order of importance to you, as time may not permit us to complete critiques on all of them.
You would like advice on materials.
These are general questions , and allow for as many questions as can be answered within the time allowed.
You would like to ask questions about specific techniques.
These are general questions, and allow for as many questions as can be answered within the time allowed. The format of Art Advice does not allow for us to demonstrate at this time, but we can point you towards books, articles and videos that will help you. As experience tutors we are very likely to be able to identify the reasons you are struggling with certain techniques by looking at the images you send us in the Booking Form, so do try to send us good quality images.
You have a general inquiry relating to your overall progress but not about a specific painting.
These are general questions, and allow for as many questions as can be answered within the time allowed. As very experienced artist and tutors we are able to ‘read’ images, and the methods by which they have been created. Do try to send us good quality images relevant to your inquiry.
