The paper you choose affects the marks you can make, and changes the style of drawing you can make. The same applies to painting!
The sketch above was made on quite smooth paper. The sketch below was made on much rougher paper. You’ll notice that the quality of the marks is quite different.
When making a drawing or sketch think about the surface of the paper you are using and choose one that is appropriate to your subject matter. Consider which surface you might choose for an apple, a shaggy dog, an egg, grasses, the sea, a mirror like pond…
Remember that the materials you use can either aid you, or hinder you!
