what to bring

Bring along your usual painting materials. It will be useful to have a sketchpad or some rough paper on which you can draw/make notes.

We’d be happy to see any paintings or sketches you have done since you were last with us.

We would also like to hear any ideas you have for what you would like to achieve this term. Please bring along any relevant reference material you have gathered for these ideas.

TOPIC of the Week: INTRODUCTION to the theme for the term

This term we will be taking a considered look at how we use reference material when we plan and execute a painting.

Quote of the week

“Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.”

Pablo Picasso

book of the week

Study of Cirrus Clouds, John Constable. Oil on paper. Circa 1822

The Cloud Book

by Richard Hamblin

‘ Clouds are one of nature’s greatest art forms with their ever-changing shapes and colours dancing to the tune of the atmosphere’s whims…’

In line with the theme for this term, we thought you might like to look at this book, which far from being a boring meteorological description of cloud types has a truly inspiring collection of photographs of clouds. Have your camera ready , you will want to take your own photos!

Or you could go down the same route as John Constable, grab you paints and make some reference sketches. Click on the image to visit the V & A website to see more of the image, and some information about it.
