what to bring

Enthusiasm! The start of a new term is full of promise…bring along your ideas for what you hope to achieve this term.

THIS Week: INTRODUCTION to the theme for the term

This week we will be introducing the theme for the term, and discussing some of the directions we wish to take it in. We will also hope to discuss with each of you what you would like to achieve this term, and encourage you to make a note of your intentions, maybe in your sketchbook. Try to think of the direction you would like your art to take this term.

‘homework’ challenge

Start collecting scraps of paper, old envelopes, and making sure you have a drawing implement handy. Anything that will make a mark will do…biro, pencil, lipstick…

Quote of the week

‘Your success is based on inner fulfilment, not external validation.’

SUCCESS!

How, as tutors, do we define success? Well, that is anything you as aspiring artists produce that has made you happy!

You are probably thinking that we are meaning finished paintings that you particularly pleased with, and yes, that would be lovely. BUT we would also love to see anything else you have produced, finished or not! This section is about the joys of making art, the doing of it, and sharing the pleasure that we get from just trying.

So, please send us photos of ANY painting, drawing or sketch you have made that has made happy for any reason. If you would like to add a short sentence or two about what the the work you send us means to you we can add it to the page. It would certainly help to encourage each other. But don’t worry if you’d rather not, we all know what this section is about.

It may be that you spent an afternoon out sketching; you might not be too pleased with the actual sketch, but you are always pleased that when you look at it it brings back memories of a lovely afternoon. Perhaps you have produced a sheet of colour notes that excited you, with some new mixes that you could share. Perhaps in a eureka moment you achieved a drawing of a building with amazing perspective that looked like it was actually going to stand up…or had a eureka moment when you realised that perspective actually doesn’t matter (nobody’s going to live in it anyway, it’s painting).

Remember, it’s on the Private page, only class members can see it.

The painting was made many years ago, and still comes up in conversation in class, most recently at the end of last term!

During the making of this painting the artist discovered how masking fluid could be used to trap pools of colour. This caused great excitement at the time, and a lot of fun was had playing with the gaps between the lines of masking fluid.

What really stands out today is that when we talk about it, we remember the infectious pleasure that we had as the painting progressed.

And Siân still loves the blue trees :)
