Summer Term week 1
Date: 18th & 19th April 2023
Tutor: Siân
what to bring
We will be focussing on colour this term, so please bring along any questions you have about colour: how to mix it, when to use it, where to use it, how has it been used by other artists, in particular genres… and anything else you might think of. As usual we have plenty of ideas for this term, but if there are particular questions about colour that come up we will include them in the plan for the term.
And of course, bring your usual painting materials to get started!
Colour of the Week: red
Quote of the week
Thank you Vicky for sending this one in. We love it!
book of the week
This book is out of print, but there are copies readily available dotted around the internet. I have not included a direct link, as the Amazon copies were extortionately expensive.
Blue and Yellow Don’t Make Green
by Michael Wilcox.
“The Painters’ Primary Colours Do Not Exist
The present systems unable to cope - it leads to frustration, limited colour expression and an enormous waste of expensive paint. There is a simple answer: that is, to abandon the three primary system and replace it with an entirely new. way of viewing colours - we have to change the way we think.”
Blue and Yellow Don’t Make Green, Page 31
OK, Micheal Wilcox is undeniably a geek about colour, but he is a geek that makes a lot of sense! This book is incredibly informative, looking at not just the colour theory that you will find in most tuition books, but also in depth at the constituents of paint and how we perceive colour. Dip your toe in, or dive in deep, the choice is yours!
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
The concept of colour psychology is quite popular these days. Here are a few web pages you find interesting, or amusing, depending on your view on the subject.
