what to bring
A sketchbook or notebook is essential this week.
A pen and a pencil, and ( if you are not bringing a sketch book) some rough paper.
Please bring along an image of a painting that you really like. It can be by any artist at all. Please try to bring an image in a format that you can show to others. e.g a print, postcard, or in a book. If you are only able to find the image in digital format please bring it on a tablet as an image on a phone will be too small.
A painting (or drawing) or your own that you have completed that you did not like (for personal use, our rule of not having to show others will apply). The actual painting will be much more useful that a photo of it on your tablet, or your phone.
As there will be very little practical this week (if any) you do not need to bring your usual materials unless you want to.
THIS Week: What INSPIRES YOU?
This week we will begin studying the theme for the term in earnest. Theis will be a very cerebral session! There will be a lot of thinking, some discussion and very little practical art this week as you take a serious look at what you really like and dislike about paintings. As the session continues we will be considering how what you discover, or realise, can be applied to your own painting.
images of the Week
An eclectic mix of paintings that we like.
Do you?
Why? Why not?
Click on an image to enlarge it, and scroll through the selection to see the images in more detail.
weekly sketching challenge
Draw a flower using a pencil.
Repeat, using a biro.
How does the change of drawing tool change your approach to the subject?
Quote of the week
“I found I could say with colour and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way - things I had no words for.”
Georgia O’Keefe
ArTIST of the week
A selection of Mark Rothko’s work.
Mark Rothko
As the artist that has elicited the most emotional and emphatic responses for class members, it seems rational to include him this week as Artist of the Week.
For more information click the link on his name to visit The Tate website, where you can read his biography and view his work.
