SUMMER Term week 2
Date: 23rd & 24th April
Tutor: Rob
TUTOR LED
what to bring
Pencils : a range of grades will be extremely useful. One of HB, B or 2B plus two softer grades, e.g. 4B and 8B.
Paper: the best choice would be a hard backed sketch pad. If you do not have a hard back sketch pad bring what you have. NOTE FOR WEDNESDAYS GROUP - if you do not have a hard backed sketch pad please try to bring along something you can rest on at an angle ( a drawing board, hardback book or a tray)
Eraser
Pencil sharpener - very important!
Rob will be bringing everything else you need.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR WEDNESDAY GROUP : THERE IS A VERY STRONG POSSIBILITY THAT BLACHFORD ROAD WILL BE CLOSED ON WEDNESDAY. I have emailed you a map with suggestions of parking and the route from Crescent Gardens through the park.
THIS Week:
Rob will be taking you through some exercises which will demonstrate different methods of drawing accurately. Observation and accuracy of relationships of points within the subject will be the prime objectives. Understanding the principles behind the methods of drawing will be far more important than the drawings you produce.
weekly sketching challenge
This week set up a simple still life, and using one of the methods used in class, draw your chosen subject. You could extend this by drawing the still life again using a different method of observing.
Sketch of the Week
Reason for making the drawing
This was a quick exercise in practising triangulation, that is looking at how a point on the subject relates to two other points on the subject. By looking at the angles between them and marking in loose directional lines it became possible to assess where one pointe.g. the top go the head, was in relation to another, e.g. the left hand. It is not finished, it was never intended to be. It is not even that accurate, but that does not matter. These skills improve with practise, this was practise.
Materials
3B pencil. No eraser.
Mark-making
Directional lines and quick scribbles.
Time
Not long! Maybe 15 minutes
Quote of the week
“Lose your inhibitions about drawing and just do it.”
Chris Riddle, children’s illustrator, who has won medals for children illustrations.
ArTIST of the week
Norman Battershill
Everything he paints is rooted in observation. He starts from a drawing.
His book ‘Light on the Landscape’ is one of Rob’s favourite books. he likes his drawings more than his paintings. He loves the economy of marks; with just a few he can sum up his subject with accuracy and expression.
