what to bring
A camera.
Your phone camera or tablet is absolutely fine. If you are unfamiliar with editing photos on your phone, please try to find a few minutes to do so before the class. I am pretty good with editing on Apple phones, but pretty useless with editing on androids! In particular you will need to be able to zoom, move the photo around on screen after zooming, and convert the image to black and white.
Please also bring along any photos you are thinking of working from this term.
You will also need pencils and sketchbooks/paper. paints and some watercolour paper for exercises.

TOPIC of the Week:
We will be looking at how we take and use photographs as reference material for paintings.
Quote of the week
“The world is very very beautiful if you look at it, but most people don’t look very much. They scan the ground in front of them so they can walk, they don’t really look at things incredibly well, with an intensity. I do.”
David Hockney
book of the week
Hockney on Art
An interesting read in which Hockney and Joyce explore the influence of Picasso and Rembrandt, and eastern ideas of perspective.
The book also looks at Hockney’s experiments challenging the conventions of photography and western perspective.
Your will know from discussions in class that this book has influenced my way of thinking abut perspective! Hopefully you will find it as freeing as I did. Siân
