CHECK OUT this artist: beryl Cook
A short break from looking at demos this week. We were lucky enough to get to the Beryl Cook exhibition at The Box in Plymouth last week. Seeing a collection of her work in one place was extraordinary. We both laughed out loud at the painting featured at the top of this page!
It’s useful to remember that she only started painting in her forties. there’s hope for us all!
Although her paintings appear to be quite simplistic, almost cartoon like, a superficial look at them misses the sophistication of her composition, handling of the paint, and observation of detail. Through all of these she captures the mood and environment of the folk she paints brilliantly.
Having said that, on one of the information boards it was claimed that she had admitted to painting her figures so ‘round’ so as to avoid painting more of the background!
We only got a few shots of some of her work. Click on each for a bigger view. Do take a look at her website for more.
