Moor to Sea Arts

Class Members Week 8 Spring 26

spring term week 8

Date: 17th & 18th March

Tutor: TUTOR LED

THIS Week:

Rob will be looking at various wet media that can be used alongside watercolour. Rather than demonstrations about the different themselves, you will be looking at ways they can be used with watercolour.

Like the last Tutor Led session will be slightly different to the usual sessions, in that we would like you all to come ready to share! Rob will lead the session demonstrating techniques but also encouraging you to show others how you achieve certain effects (don’t worry, this will not be compulsory).

WHAT TO BRING

Any wet media you would like to try or receive tips for : e.g. gum arabic, iridescent medium etc that can be mixed with watercolour, but also inks, acrylic inks, acrylic paints gouache , or anything else you think of. Also:

  • Watercolour paints and palette.

  • Brushes: our usual watercolour brushes, but also some that you will not mind using for inks or acrylics. It is much more difficult to keep brushes use for these materials in good condition, and we wouldn’t want you spoiling your favourite watercolour through experimenting with new media.

  • Plenty of watercolour paper (not stretched)

  • ‘Old’ paintings, to practise layering techniques on.

  • Pencils to make notes next to swatches, noting how you made the marks and how it might be used in the context of a painting.

  • Books, articles or short vidoes that show a technique that you have either tried, or would like to try.

  • An open mind!

On that last point , the prize for creative ingenuity in the last tutor led session, when we asked you to bring anything you thought you might be able to use to make marks with watercolour, goes to

Sue Butt (Wednesday morning)

Her contribution: broccoli!

Thank you Sue! One we would never have thought of!

What is this? How would you use it with watercolour?

‘homework’ challenge

Take an old ‘failed’ painting and experiment to see what difference you can make to it using one (or some ) of the media used in class today.

Quote of the week

Everything I needed to know about creativity I learned by making mistakes.
