what to bring
This week we will be looking at different drawing media. Please bring
your brushes
one or two paints (e.g. ultramarine)
watercolour paper (not stretched)
a biro
an eraser
a selection of different papers (e.g.sketch book, computer paper, cartridge, an old newspaper)
If you have any of the following please bring along a selection of other materials such as charcoal, pastel, conte crayons, pens, felt pens… in fact anything you have that you use, or might use, for drawing.
No need to buy anything , we will be bringing some materials with us.
weekly sketching challenge
Try every day to make an extremely quick sketch with whatever you have to hand at that moment.
This could be of anything, using anything. Out for a walk? Use a dandelion leaf on a scrap of paper or a stone. Making a cake? Sprinkle some flour on the works surface and draw with your finger or the tip of a spoon.
SKETCH OF THE WEEK
This page from my sketchbook show drawings I was making of the grasses in a field of poppies.
I was very clearly thinking ahead, deliberately using pencils marks that would translate to marks I could make with a brush in watercolour.

THIS Week:
We will be looking at different materials for drawing, and how this affects our drawing in terms of style or mark-making. We will looking at how drawing can relate to watercolour. Remember, ultimately, it is all about keen observation!
There will be short demos of techniques and opportunity to experiment yourself.
Quote of the week
“When I see a white piece of paper feel I’ve got to draw. And drawing for me is the beginning or everthing.“
Ellsworth Kelly was an American painter, sculptor and printmaker associated with hard-edge painting, colour field painting and minimalsim. After reading a quote like that it would be entirely reasonable to assume he was a figurative artist. But follow the links below ( or do your own searches) to discover that his work was far from figurative, yet drawing was ‘the beginning of everything’ for him.
Book of the week
Jackson’s Paper Guide
A slight interruption to showing you an artist this week, and a return to ‘Book of the week’ instead.
We received this book as a freebie with a large order, tossed it to one side thinking it was a catalogue. What a mistake that was!
This book is an excellent guide to art papers! It gives information about different types of art papers, how they are made, different surfaces, what the different materials used to make paper are and how that affects how the resulting papers can be used…
This makes it sound overly geeky. It is not. It is simple, clear and well worth a read.
The information is compiled by Jackson’s, but is completely unbiased regarding brands and does not quote prices.
