Garrowby Hill David Hockney
Thank you all for your understanding, kind comments and concern last week. Rob spent a few days in Derriford hospital while they investigated his sudden and extreme headache and upper chest pains. Unable to reach a diagnosis they decided what it was not ( not a stroke, not a heart attack, nothing imminently life changing) so the next step is to go to the GP. He is currently feeling well and is intending to come to class this week.
‘homework’ challenge
Stare at trees. How many colours can you see?
Hmmm, yes we know this is the same as last week. We’d put money on you not having done it for long enough. To be discussed in class, and we would LOVE to be proved wrong!!
If you did manage to stare until you could see many unexpected colours in trees during last week’s homework. you might like to extend it this week by making painted colour swatches of your perceived colours.
This can result in more unexpected observations. Once you find the paints you feel match the colours you are ‘seeing’, you will probably find that you see those colours more easily in the trees themselves at first glance.

No doubt there are still some ( many) of you wondering why I am so impressed with David Hockney.
While I like some of his work very much, it was not his paintings that promoted him from ‘An artist I like very Much’ to “Absolute Hero’.
It was his attitude to art, to seeing and observing the world at depth, and to his ability to share his observations. He did this not to promote his own work, but to increase our understanding of the world and what we see.
Reading ‘Hockney on Art’ Conversations with Paul Joyce was the first time I realised just how much he had to offer. I can only suggest you read it!
