Colour of the Week : White
In terms of light, white is a combination of all the colours of the visible spectrum: red, yellow, orange, green, blue, indigo and violet, and has provided us with an order for studying paint colours this term. BUT, in terms of art, combining all these colours gives you a muddy mess!
In watercolour we tend not to use use white paint, relying on the colour of the paper to shine through the transparent colour laid on to it. What is the whitest effect we can achieve? Does sneaking in some white colour using another medium help? How do we deal with those pesky shadows: what colour are they, how deep is the tone?
Quote of the week
‘When you glaze on a bright white ground it is like looking through colour rather than at it - like looking through stained glass’
Fred Machetanz. American painter 1908-2002.
