‘Thank you CRM!’ Watercolour on paper. Siân Dudley

‘Thank You CRM’

This painting was clearly inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The give-away is in the title!

These fritallaria grew in the garden outside by last studio, and were crying out to be painted. The original inspiration came from the flowers themslelves, but the design of the painting was very much based on CRM’s painting of the same subject.

I love the deceptive simplicity of his flower paintings. They are deceptive because at first glance the images are clean and uncluttered - ’simple’. However on closer inspection it can be seen just how closely he has observed the plant, all botanical details being present and correct. His use of colour is descriptive. The way the composition is laid down on the paper is always balanced, leading the eye cleverly from one part of the plant to the next with ease. He is clearly an expert with both pencil and watercolour; his confident use of both is evident in the clarity of line and the way the paint has been laid down.

Truly inspirational artwork!

weekly sketching challenge

As we move from summer into autumn the weekly sketching challenge focusses on seed heads and late season flowers. The challenge is to draw either a seed head or flower using pencil, but without taking the pencil away from the surface of the paper. Draw it in one continuous line. You could draw a single specimen or arrange a small bunch of seed heads and flowers, just so long as your pencil dosen’t leave the surface of the paper!

ArTIST (?) of the week

Charles Rennie Mackintosh

During our recent visit to Scotland Siân visited the reconstruction of Mackinstosh’s house in Glasgow. It was amazing!

Being in a room with one of his original watercolours, shown here, was wonderful. It was great to see furniture he designed in the same space as one of his watercolours of flowers. The connection between the inspiration he drew from botanical sources and the designs of his furniture and decoration was really brought home.

You may be more familiar with his furniture designs than his watercolours. Do follow tis link to a Google image search to explore them further.
