Quote of the week
‘Despite my reference sketch being done a few months ago, the memory of the subject on that cold January afternoon still resonates as though it was drawn yesterday.’
Paul Weaver, in an article in this months ‘Leisure Painter & The Artist’ entitled ‘Drawing for Painting.’ (page 100)
We Saw…
We notices the number of blues in the sky!
It is always tempting to mix up a single blue wash when painting a blue sky, simply gradating the tone from darker at the top to player at the bottom. the usual quandary is ‘Which blue do I use?’
Any single colour of paint you decide to use is probably not enough to create a satisfactory colour, so you will probably have mixed it to a single homogenous colour.
But look again.
The colour blue changes too. Certain areas of the sky will be warmer, clearer, or cooler than others. Near the horizon it might change to a completely different hue, requiring either a new mix of paints, or at the very least different proportions of the mix you already have.
The changes are often easier to see if there are some clouds in the sky, comparing the blues above and below them.
