Inspiring Light
It was the light coming through the trellis that inspired this painting, not the daffoldils. It was the subject of an article for th A & I called ‘Waiting For The Light’. A second source of inpsiration was playing with colour. I emphasised the purple in the shadows to contrast with the yellow of the flowers. A third source of inspiration, which led to the style in which the painting was made, was the way watercolour runs and flows on wet paper ; lovely, juicy wet-in-wet techniques. Yum.
weekly sketching challenge
Anti-inspriation, but good for you. Make a 10 minute drawing EVERY DAY. Time yourself. Don’t dither, observe well, draw quickly, don’t fuss. Just do it. Just draw what is in front of you. Don’t fuss about finishing it (unless you want to :) )
Hint: in a 10 minute drawing that could be 7 minutes looking, 3 minutes drawing.
Quote of the week
An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way. An artist says a hard thing in a simple way.

David Parfitt RI
We met David Parfitt at Art in Action a few years ago. He was one of the artists in the ’Painting’ marquee, so we had opportunity to watch him work.
He uses watercolour in exciting ways, making it look, as he says he aims to in the quote above, lose and free and not at all contrived or deliberate. It was a surprise to watch him working, very slowly and deliberately!
His paintings are inspiring, do take a look a his website.
