Paris Blue
We often struggle to choose a suitable blue for skies.
Paris blue is a lovely blue for British skies. It is non-granaulting, and transparent. Depending the context of your painting it can seem like a bright summer sky, but also lends itself to giving the impression of this slightly hazy, greyed skies that we usually get in the summer in the UK.
According to Wilcox the Schmincke version of Paris blue is ‘a seemingly pointless mix of three very similar, transparent green blue.’ I disagree with him. Paris blue is a very useful colour!
Wilcox?
Michael Wilcox was responsible for the ‘Michael Wilcox school of colour, and the book “The Wilcox Guide to the Finest Watercolour Paints’, a book for the nerdiest of nerdy geeks if ever there was one. His first book, ‘Blue and Yellow Don’t Make Green’ was a warning of what was to come.
( Shh, don’t tell anyone, we have copies of both…)
‘homework’ challenge
We will be bringing in a list of paint mixes that make greys this week. Make a list of them in class, and see which mixes will give you a deep, rich, dark black.
Quote of the week
“If you see a tree as blue, paint it blue’
Paul Gauguin.
ArTIST of the week
Paul gauguin.
Paul Gauguin was a French artist who worked in a number of disciplines including painting. He was not particularly successful during his lifetime, but has been since been recognised for his experimental approach to colour.
He worked with both Pisarro (1879-91) and also with Van Gogh (1888) ; you might notice the influences on his work.
Read more about him on the National Gallery Page Gauguin
